Pathways began as the result of a meeting held in Juneau in the spring of 1988. Organized by the Alaska Department of Education and the Governor’s Council on Disabilities and Special Education. Parents and professionals from throughout Alaska met to form a statewide parent organization and plan a statewide parent conference. From this meeting Pathways and PARENTS, Inc. were formed.

The first Pathways conference was held at the Anchorage Hilton in April 1989. The Department of Education provided the largest amount of funding and coordinated the conference with the assistance of parents. The Division of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, the Infant Learning Program, the Governor’s Council on Disabilities and Special Education, Special Education Services Agency, the Anchorage Special Education Parent Resource Center, and PARENTS, Inc. were all major contributors of monetary and indirect support. We hoped 100 people would attend. Registration went over 500, and we assisted 75 parents with travel stipends.

Since the first conference in 1989, Pathways has been held in 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995, and 1997. Due to increased participation by families and professionals, the conference attendance has grown and we moved the main conference activities to the Egan Convention Center.

In 1992 we featured a fashion show–a wonderful performance highlighting our children with disabilities as models. This event has become a must-see at the conference. It’s a delightful confirmation that children with disabilities belong and have much to offer our society.

Participation from nationally known experts has also increased. The 1999 PARENTS, Inc. Pathways conference was attended by almost 1,500 people.
